A photometric study of the eclipsing binary V889 AQL: An example of relathistic apsidal motion

In this paper we have analyzed the existing photoelectric observations of the long-period eclipsing binary V889 Aql in order to obtain the corresponding photometric elements and the period of apsidal motion. The study of this highly eccentric system was performed by means of the classical Russell an...

The study of this highly eccentric system was performed by means of the classical Russell and Merrill method as well as the computer codes NDE by Nelson, Davis and Etzel and WINK by Wood. Our results indicate that the two components of the system are very similar and the orbital inclination is close to 90°. Absolute dimensions were also estimated and the stars have been found to be almost unevolved. Apsidal motion has been discussed through the study of all available photoelectric minima. The photographic and visual estimates are very probably uncertain but the movement of the periastron seems definitely established though at a very slow rate. The period of apsidal motion was found to be close to 2 10 yr. The relativistic term of the observed periastron advance appears to be the main contribution and is in perfect agreement with the theoretical value.EDP SciencesConsejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas [https://ror.org/02gfc7t72]2025202519822025info:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Publisher's versioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://hdl.handle.net/10261/389289reponame:DIGITAL.CSIC.
