| Sumario: | Strengthening of a structure is any operation oriented to increase the performance of a structure in terms of functionality, safety, and durability. This study focuses on the technique of strengthening reinforced concrete columns subjected to eccentric axial load by concrete cross-section enlargement and additional reinforcement. The objectives are to understand their structural behavior, evaluate their resistance capacity considering the influence of the initial forces of the original support, the size of the enlargement, and the amount of additional reinforcement, as well as, to provide a useful tool for the design of the strengthening. For this purpose, a methodology is proposed to generate the interaction diagrams of strengthened supports by using nonlinear calculation programs of the initial section and spreadsheets to integrate the nonlinear stress distribution for each plane of the deformation domains. A parametric study of 27 interaction diagrams, corresponding to 9 reinforced sections subjected to three levels of initial solicitation, is developed to verify the results obtained by a validated nonlinear evolutive analysis program. From the analysis of the results, the influence of the initial forces on the ultimate resistance of the reinforced support is confirmed, as well as its effect on the size of enlargement and amount of additional reinforcement. |
