| Sumario: | The paper reviews the background, progress and limitations of studies on size-sex and sex-ratio at size (SRs) patterns described for Atlantic swordfish and their relationship to the life stages of the species. Similar SRs patterns have been described for different fleets, space-time strata and even oceans, which has led researchers to propose characteristic patterns. We examine some of the research carried out to date into these variables and the processes applied by ICCAT in the 1980s and 1990s. We review conclusions reached in these studies and by working groups that probably were relevant and have subsequently led to methodological approaches to conducting and comparing assessments done by sex vs. sex combined for northern swordfish stock. The results of some of the most recent studies and updates of Atlantic SRs are also summarised. These recent results confirm previously described patterns which had been assumed by ICCAT for the stratification of size-sex data. |
