Descripción
Sumario:This doctoral thesis constitutes a biography of Francisco de Aldana (1537-1578). The search for, and location of, documentation on this great Hispano-Florentine poet and soldier in numerous archives and libraries has made it possible to re-examine his biography and bring it up to date. Hitherto his life had been set out in one single piece of research: the North American Elias L. Rivers’ Francisco de Aldana, el divino capitán, published in 1953. With that work as the starting point, it has been possible to note the considerable lack of documentation that it displays, to set out new hypotheses, to discard others completely, to correct errors and to cover several important blank spaces, for which up to now practically no documentation had been found. By way of rigorously historiographical method, this thesis provides the most up-to-date critical approach to Aldana’s life, from his early years in Italy as a Spanish infantry soldier, whilst in the service of the Dukes of Florence, up to his last, agonic days at Alcazarquivir alongside King Sebastian of Portugal, with, in between, his decisive years in the wars against the Turk in the Mediterranean and against revolt and Protestantism in Flanders’ fields. What is offered here is a biography that aims to go beyond the mere recounting of the incidents of his life, attempting instead to set them within his socio-political and family dynamics and the historical events that created Early Modern Europe.
