After reviewing the main contributions to the non-equivalence approach, we present a case study that compares the use of similes and corresponding metaphors deployed by Spanish digital media to communicate Covid-19 from February 2020 to February 2022. The corpus includes constructions with the word virus/coronavirus as a target both in simile form (94 examples, 76 sources for ‘(corona)virus is like X’) and in metaphor form (225 examples, 35 sources for ‘(corona)virus is X’). A first analysis of the sources concludes that less than half of the simile sources have been found in metaphor construction, and that their conceptual nature also differs; simile sources being more specific than metaphor ones. A second analysis shows differences in mappings, highlighted by a more frequent inclusion of elaborations in simile constructions; the main determining variable being the more apt/conventional or creative nature of the sources. The general conclusions of the case study coincide with previous psycholinguistic and cognitive work giving evidence for the non-equivalent approach to both figures. Even if the results must be viewed as tendencies, there are significant differences in the use of similes and corresponding metaphors, with cases that can only be accounted for at the simile-metaphor interfaceThis study has been carried out under the research project “Polarization and Digital Discourses: Critical and Socio-Cognitive perspectives” (PODDS, PID2020-119102RBI00), funded by the Spanish Ministry for Science and InnovationDe Gruyter MoutonDepartamento de Filología InglesaFacultad de Filosofía y Letras20242024-01-01book parthttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_3248AMhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_ab4af688f83e57aainfo:eu-repo/semantics/bookPartapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10486/719356https://dx.doi.org/10.1515/9783111001364-002reponame:Biblos-e Archivo.
