Sumario:The extrajudicial application of penalties is a distinctive feature of canon law that the current 1983 Code clearly places after the judicial criminal process. However, in recent years, this process has undergone a significant resurgence due to the approval of a plethora of extra-Code regulations that has increased the number of cases in which a canonical offense may be punished by decree. Thus, there are now specific regulations relating to this matter in up to three Vatican Congregations, because in many cases the so-called criminal administrative procedure offers significant advantages in terms of simplicity and efficiency. Given these reasons, in conclusion, a study of the cases in which canonical offenses can be punished by administrative means is needed, enabling a clearer vision of the legal system of the Church as a whole and, at the same time, as well as of what aspects might be improved.
