Sumario:Liquid crystal nanoparticles, namely hexosomes and cubosomes, are promising drug nanocarriers. In this work, poly(dimethylsiloxane)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PDMS-PEO) block copolymers were used to formulate hexosomes and cubosomes. A commercial PDMS-g-PEO graft copolymer was found to form a reverse hexagonal phase (H2) in water within specific ranges of temperature and concentration. The unit cell parameter of the copolymer H2 phase is much larger than those of lipids, so there is potential for the encapsulation of larger molecules. This H2 phase was dispersed in water with the help of a stabilizer, and colloidally stable hexosomes with a size between 180-210 nm were obtained. Additionally, linear PDMS- PEO copolymers were synthesized by a conjugation reaction using monocarboxydecyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane and poly(ethylene glycol) amine (PEGamine) with various molecular weights (750, 1000, 2000 and 5000 Da) and EDC /DCC with NHS or CDI as a coupling agent. Preliminary observations indicate that the synthesized linear PDMS-PEO copolymers do not form birefringent liquid crystals with water. The presence of isotropic liquid crystals (e.g. cubic phases) is possible but this should be confirmed by additional experiments in the future.
