Sumario:While numerous studies have examined the identity, roles, and perceptions of native and non-native teachers in language education, the perceptions and hiring practices of recruiters across various contexts – and specifically in the Expanding Circle – remain underexplored. This chapter seeks to investigate native-speakerist discourses prevalent in the English language profession and the resulting biases faced by non-native educators, especially in relation to the job market and their prospects of being hired and under what conditions in the private language school market in Catalonia. Employing a qualitative approach, the research draws on in-depth interviews with six private language school owners and managers in a Catalan city to determine whether these stakeholders view nativeness as a seal of quality and whether such belief influences their hiring practices. The findings reveal a persistent native-speaker supremacy ideology, shaping recruiters’ decisions and reinforcing discriminatory practices in the hiring of English language teachers.
