Sumario:The article discusses the independent appearance of metallurgy during the Iberian Chalcolithic (3200– 2250 cal BC). A new model based on corresponding developments in the Balkans and Central Europe is introduced. With the Cerro Virtud Neolithic site in the Almería province in southeastern Spain in focus, the authors discuss the limitation of external influences in the development of metal technology, which they regard as having been very limited until the Late Chalcolithic. They likewise discuss the social value of metal and metallurgy within the local communities
