Descripción
Sumario:[EN] This article explores the governance system of the Spanish Monarchy in the 17th century, considered the first global empire in history. A critical prosopography is employed to analyze in detail the trajectories of the 185 State Councilors, who made up the king's most elite advisory body. We investigate their roles as viceroys and ambassadors to better understand the functioning of the Monarchy's cursus honorum. The study pays special attention to how the management of internal and external government was conceptualized through ideas about the State at that time. Additionally, it discusses how the tradition of courtly service, exemplified by pragmatic and prudent nobles, predominated over the concept of specialized political careers.
