Among recent strategies for soil remediation the use of crop plants as metal extractors is bein applied as an alternative to hyperaccumulators. Although crop plants have a lower accumulating capacity of pollutants in the aerial parts, they may take advantage of their higher biomass production (Salt el al. 1998) In an attempt to find suitable crop plants for the recovery of these soils, an evaluation was performed on the forage leguminous species Lupinus albus cv. Multolupa, a leguminous plant that is starting to genérate interest for the phytoremediation of soils showing intermediate heavy metal pollution. In this way white lupin might be an interesting alternative, since it has a strong root system and display great capacity of solubilization and uptake of elements from soils (Dinkelader el al}. Lupins have been reported to accumulate manganese from several soils (Gladstones 1962 a, Gladstones and Drover 1962 b, Chamberlain and Searle 1963), some of which were found to be slightly acid. Elevated Al levéis similar to those for Mn, were found in their leaves. The level of Mn accumulated (Reay and Waugh 1981) is in excess of that generally considered to be toxic to plants (Labanauskas 1966). The behaviour of this species towards heavy metáis is currently being explored by several authors (Costa and Morel 1993, López-Fernández 2000, Carpena et al. 2001, Ximenez-Embún et al. 2001, Vera et al. 2002). Among these metáis, Zn causes major phytotoxicity problems and is a common metal in polluted soils of central Spain. The aim of this study was to explore the nutritional behaviour of this plant species towards increasing Zn and Pb concentrations in several soils of Madrid área.AMB88-1218 y 07M-0029-2001Peer reviewed201220122002info:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://hdl.handle.net/10261/57212reponame:DIGITAL.CSIC.
