We consider the case of Catalonia, where the two main speech communities, Spanish and Catalan, are of similar sizes, and both languages are official, and exploit the natural experiment generated by a language-in-education reform. We discuss theoretically the main alternative channels through which such policies may affect the language parents speak to their children. Empirically, we find that the reform improved oral skills in Catalan among native Spanish speakers. These greater skills increased the propensity to speak Catalan with the offspring, which highlights the intergenerational spillovers overs of the reform. We also show that the effect is not confounded by spurious trends, potential changes in language identity, and linguistically mixed partnership formation. We gratefully acknowledge funding from: Spanish Ministry of Finance, Industry, and Competitiveness ECO2017–88129-P (AEI/FEDER, UE), Severo Ochoa Programme for Centres of Excellence in R&D SEV-2015–0563 and Generalitat de Catalunya 2017-SGR1136 (Caminal); Università Cattolica D32 ESEM strategic research grant (Cappellari); Spanish Ministry of Finance, Industry, and Competitiveness ECO2016–75805-R, RecerCaixa 2016ACUP00020 (Di Paolo).Elsevier BVMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad (España)Generalitat de CatalunyaEuropean CommissionFundación la CaixaConsejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas [https://ror.org/02gfc7t72]2021202120212021info:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Publisher's versioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://hdl.handle.net/10261/254065reponame:DIGITAL.CSIC.
