La identificación y caracterización de fallas normales activas cuaternarias, principalmente en la plataforma media y externa existente entre la desembocadura del río Guadalquivir hasta la Bahía de Cádiz, está basada en la interpretación de perfiles de reflexión sísmica de alta y muy alta resolución, donde los Cortejos Sedimentarios Transgresivo (TST) y de Alto Nivel del mar (HST) están afectados por dichas estructuras. Esta caracterización ha permitido cuantificar la actividad neotectónica del área durante el periodo de tiempo entre el Pleistoceno Terminal y la actualidad (18 ka), a partir de la estimación relativa de las tasas de desplazamiento y la datación relativa del movimiento de estas estructuras tectónicas.New evidences of recent tectonic activity have been found at the outer and middle continental shelf of the Gulf of Cadiz, from the Guadalquivir river mouth to the Bay of Cádiz. The characterization of Quaternary active faults is based on the interpretation of high and very high resolution seismic reflection profiles, where faults are affecting the Transgressive System Tract (TST) and Highstand System Tract (HST). Normal faults following E-W to NW-SE trends have been identified and mapped, and are related to WNW-ESE deep listric faults and diapiric structures.
