An Empire that knew how to solve management problems due to the enormous distances between Madrid and its vast domains simply by delegating the king’s powers to his officials. And of loyalty of these royal officers towards their superiors and that of all to one towards their king. Since religion played a fundamental role, the Monarchy of Spain, or the Catholic Monarchy of Spain, was always a dynamic aggregate of territories. There was no institutional unit except that of the king, the governing head of all that vast territory. This paper analyses the transition from the Trastámara dynasty to that of the Habsburgs and how they had to respond to the new needs that arose from the Monarchy regarding the expansion of its possessions in Europe and America. For this, a tour of the institutional functioning of this extensive Empire is made.[ES] En este artículo se expone el funcionamiento del Imperio español en los siglos XVI y XVII, centurias de su máximo apogeo. Un Imperio que supo resolver unos problemas de gestión debido a las enormes distancias entre Madrid y sus vastos dominios, sencillamente por medio de la delegación de las atribuciones del rey a sus oficiales. Y de una lealtad de estos oficiales reales para con sus superiores y la de todos a una para con su rey. La Monarquía de España, o Monarquía Católica de España, pues la religión jugó un papel fundamental, fue un agregado de territorios siempre dinámico. No había una unidad institucional salvo la del rey que era la cabeza rectora de todo ese vasto territorio. En este trabajo se analiza el paso de la dinastía Trastámara a la de los Habsburgo y como se tuvo que dar respuesta a las nuevas necesidades surgidas por parte de la Monarquía en cuanto a la ampliación de sus posesiones en Europa y en América.
