However, this unused and unexplored spectrum does not come with its own challenges. One of the biggest challenges in supporting the required high transmission speed will be the limited power of the transmitting devices, which will be key to combat the high propagation losses and the molecular absorption present in this frequency band. This will require the use of highly directional antennas, and the study of novel antennas will become necessary to meet the expectations. In this thesis, we propose the use of leaky-wave antenna arrays for THz communications. The beam-steering capabilities of leaky-wave antennas provide them with an alternative method of radiating high directive beams over a wide range of directions. By using a linear array of leaky-wave antennas, two possibilities are described. On the one hand, it allows to perform three-dimensional beamforming in order to achieve even higher directivities and to scan in both the elevation and azimuth angles. On the other hand, it will be proven that is also possible to do spatial multiplexing thanks to its directive pattern and beam-steering behaviour, increasing the achievable data rates of the link.
