Disentangling the interplay among cognitive biases: Evidence of combined effects of attention, interpretation and autobiographical memory in depression

Previous research has found that cognitive biases in attention, interpretation, and memory play an important role in depression. However, there is little knowledge of the interplay between these biases in clinical depression. The present study was aimed to model different pathways of relation among...

However, there is little knowledge of the interplay between these biases in clinical depression. The present study was aimed to model different pathways of relation among attention, interpretation and autobiographical memory biases, and to examine their contribution to account for depression status outcomes. Cognitive biases were evaluated in a sample comprising 22 currently-depressed and 36 never-depressed individuals representing a broad range of depression severity levels. Cognitive biases were assessed by three separate tasks using different types of stimuli. Our main finding was a significant indirect effect model in which attention bias to negative faces was linked to greater negative memory bias via its association with negative interpretation bias. Within this model, the specific pathway between attention bias to negative faces and negative interpretation bias accounted both for significant variance in depression severity as well as for depression diagnostic status. These findings increase our understanding of the complex interplay between cognitive mechanisms involved in clinical depression and highlight hypothetical pathways relevant for future interventions.SpringerUniversidad Complutense de Madrid20172017-05-1320172017-05-13journal articlehttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501AMhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_ab4af688f83e57aainfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14352/116295reponame:Docta Complutenseinstname:Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM)InglésengMinisterio de Ciencia e Innovación http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100004837 Not available PSI2012-35500Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100003329 Not available PSI2015-69253-R MODIFICACION DE SESGOS COGNITIVOS (MSC) EN LA DEPRESION: INVESTIGACION BASICA Y APLICACIONES CLINICASMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100003329 Not available PSI2014-61764-EXP CAMBIO DE PATRONES ATENCIONALES HACIA ESTIMULOS EMOCIONALES MEDIANTE TECNICAS DE EYE-TRACKING: UNA NUEVA INTERVENCION PARA LA DEPRESIONMinisterio de Ciencia e Innovación http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100004837 Not available BES-2010-030840 BES-2010-030840Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia Not available AP2007-01141 AP2007-01141open accesshttp://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessoai:docta.ucm.es:20.500.14352/1162952026-06-02T12:44:21Z
