Resumo:The ageing of the population is a global phenomenon and a challenge for society. Increased chronic diseases and reduced welfare are the main global public health challenges associated with the ageing population. The transformation of healthcare is necessary to address these challenges, and technology plays a crucial role. Telemedicine and Telehealth have demonstrated significant potential to reduce healthcare costs and improve clinical outcomes. This study assesses the impact of telemedicine on clinical outcomes and the reduction of health system costs in the care of chronic or long-term patients. An initial search was conducted yielding a total of 74 articles, from which we excluded those that did not deal with chronic or long-term conditions, were prior to 2010, or were not written in English. The result was a total of 14 articles that were analyzed. They were classified by area of intervention and it was found that 50% of the studies were focused on cardiovascular or oncological diseases. Dimensions related to savings for the system and for patients were analyzed and even in the increase in general satisfaction for patients, obtaining promising results. As a conclusion, it was possible to demonstrate that Telemedicine is cost-effective, improves clinical results as well as patient satisfaction.
