Resumo:This master's thesis objective is to analyze the Spanish electricity market, focusing on its operation, strengths, weaknesses, and recent policies implemented to become a more transparent and liberalized market. Starting on a comprehensive literature review and data analysis, several points of the electricity market are examined, including its historical context, different manipulation cases, and the evaluation of different concentration indexes. The first part of this master’s thesis is the literature review, it provides a detailed overview of the Spanish electricity market, its evolution and current structure. Different situations as "Iberian exception" are evaluated and cases of market manipulation are detailed, explaining how these practices affect competition and market efficiency. In the data analysis chapter, different indexes and models are explained to evaluate market concentration and its impact on energy market. The results show a slight reduction in market concentration, but the dominance of three large companies controlling approximately 80% of the electricity commercialization in Spain is highlighted as an issue. Finally, this thesis concludes that, although there are signs of progress towards a more transparent and less monopolized market, significant challenges still exist. The dominant presence of a few companies continues to be a big obstacle to offer a healthy competition and greater market competence. Recent policies and regulatory reforms are vital for advancing in this direction, helping the entry of new players and ensuring a more balanced and fair market environment for all participants.
