Proceedings, IX International Conference on Management of the Diamondback Moth and other Crucifer Insects Pests. World Vegetable Center, Taiwan. WorldVeg Publication No. 24-1089.The diamondback moth Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) and the cabbage white butterfly Pieris rapae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) are both specialized in using glucosinolate-containing Brassicaceae as host-plants. This research investigated the association between P. rapae and P. xylostella oviposition, larval survival, and host-plant glucosinolate content in 17 plant species. Two-choice oviposition tests (comparing each plant species to Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh.) and larval survival experiments showed that the indolic glucosinolate content of the host plant had a positive effect on oviposition preference and larval survival in these two specialist insects. In the host plants tested, the effects of indolic glucosinolates on oviposition preference were greater on P. xylostella than on P. rapae. This study suggests that high indolic glucosinolate content could make crop plants susceptible to both P. rapae and P. xylostella. The results of this research are discussed with regard to host-plant resistance and trap cropping.I also acknowledge the Max Planck Society funding and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation grant PID2021-126472OB-I00.Peer reviewedWorld Vegetable CenterRoyal University of Agriculture (Cambodia)Ministry of Agriculture (Taiwan)Agencia Estatal de Investigación (España)Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (España)Max Planck SocietyBadenes-Pérez, Francisco Rubén [0000-0002-8954-7920]Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas [https://ror.org/02gfc7t72]202520252024info:eu-repo/semantics/otherhttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_3248Publisher's versioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/bookPartapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10261/381624reponame:DIGITAL.CSIC.
