Sumario:[EN] Public policies in Europe encourage the use of forage legumes (including lucerne) with a view to limiting the continent’s protein deficit and protecting the environment. In this work, we retrace how public policy has changed over time to clarify the policy choices that were made. We can thus better predict the CAP proposals that may come under debate in the post-2020 period. Following various reforms to the CAP , aid programs have been implemented as part of the first (e.g., coupled support) and second policy pillars. However, it is crucial that livestock farmers and advisors consider how legume use affects farm revenues over multiple years rather than taking an approach that focuses strictly on food costs or the gross margins associated solely with lucerne cultivation.
