| Sumario: | The origin of the hyoid bone, classically, was considered as a derivative from the third and fourth pharyngeal arches. The lesser horn and the superior part of the body of the hyoid bone formed from the ossified ventral end of the second arch in continuity with it similar opposite part of the other side. The cartilage of the third arch joined to the corresponding cartilage of the second arch; and also, in the middle line, to the second and third cartilages of the opposite side. When an ossification happens, the cartilage of the third arch develops into the greater horn and the caudal portion of the body of the hyoid bone as noted by Hamilton and Mossman, 1975, and similarly the authors texts embryology (Sadler, 1996, Moore and Persaud, 1999, Carlson, 2009) considered that the lesser horns and the superior part of the body of the hyoid bone derived from the cartilage of the second arch; and the inferior part of the body of the hyoid bone and the greater horns from the cartilages of the third arches. In this sense, this theory could be denominated: “Dual theory of the origin of the hyoid bone”. Hypotheses.
