Description
Summary:Several aspects about the geochemistry of silica rocks concerning diagenesis and replacement are examined in detail. The great diversity of chert types and the complexity of the silicification process, however, make this analysis only partial. Geochemical mass-balance and isocon diagrams are carried out jn silcretes considering both silicified and inmediately unsilicified parent material. Analytical data from different silicified materials allow, after the definition of an immobile element (Al), the amount of each mobile element added to or removed from the parent mater to be determined. Quarz isotopic values, from different cherts included in Dogger and Malm limestones are analysed to infer burial paleotemperatures, timing of transformation from opal to chert, and meteoric water participation in the silicification process.
