Sumario:Recent and subrecent sediments of the Balearic Continental Shelf are studied in detail three pilote zones: Campos Bay, South of Menorca and Menorca Channel. As a result, seven main groups of sedimentar~ facies are identified: A) alga, B) bivalve dominated, C) gastropod dominated, D) bioclastic, E) mixed, F) lithic fragments dominated and G) cemented (alga1 crusts and calcarenites). Facies distribution is closely linked with depth (except in the South of Menorca) and benthic communities living at different levels on the shelf. The surficial sediments of the Balearic Continental Shelf were accumulated during Versilian transgresión
