| Summary: | This study focuses on how the Northern Subject Rule functions in the first, second, and third person plural contexts of the present indicative in Older Scots. It confirms that these plural forms were subject to the NSR between 1380 and 1500 based on the analysis of the corpus Linguistic Atlas of Older Scots, and it investigates the interrelated behaviour of the Proximity-to-Subject Constraint and the Type-of-Subject Constraint. Furthermore, this paper explores the force of the first constraint, which has recently been considered to be weaker than the second. |
