Sumario:It is not clear what Aristotle means when he states that virtue is a mean between two extremes in respect of its essence, but an extreme from the perspective of the good. This paper explains some of the premises of the Aristotelian theory of virtue that can be found in Aspasius’ commentary and have since been neglected by the interpretive tradition, while at the same time indicating what problems remain despite Aspasius’ explanatory attempts.
