Distributed phase birefringence measurements based on polarization correlation in phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometers

In this paper a technique to measure the distributed birefringence profile along optical fibers is proposed and experimentally validated. The method is based on the spectral correlation between two sets of orthogonally-polarized measurements acquired using a phase-sensitive optical time-domain refle...

The method is based on the spectral correlation between two sets of orthogonally-polarized measurements acquired using a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (φOTDR). The correlation between the two measured spectra gives a resonance (correlation) peak at a frequency detuning that is proportional to the local refractive index difference between the two orthogonal polarization axes of the fiber. In this way the method enables local phase birefringence measurements at any position along optical fibers, so that any longitudinal fluctuation can be precisely evaluated with metric spatial resolution. The method has been experimentally validated by measuring fibers with low and high birefringence, such as standard single-mode fibers as well as conventional polarizationmaintaining fibers. The technique has potential applications in the characterization of optical fibers for telecommunications as well as in distributed optical fiber sensing.European CommissionMinisterio de Economía y CompetitividadComunidad de MadridOptical Society of America20152015-01-01journal articlehttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501NAhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_be7fb7dd8ff6fe43info:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10017/25740https://dx.doi.org/10.1364/OE.23.024923reponame:e_Buah Biblioteca Digital Universidad de Alcaláinstname:Universidad de Alcalá (UAH)InglésengEuropean Commission http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100000780 Seventh Framework Programme 307441 Ubiquitous optical FIbre NErvesMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100003329 Not available TEC2012-37958-C02-01 TECNOLOGIAS DE SEGURIDAD CIVIL BASADAS EN FIBRA OPTICAComunidad de Madrid http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/100012818 Not available S2009%2FMIT2790 Sensores e INstrumentación en tecnologías FOTÓNicasEC Interreg Sudoe SOE3%2FP2%2FP714 Gestión ecológica de pilas de residuos de carbón en combustiónopen accesshttp://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2Atribución-NoComercial-SinDerivadas 3.0 Españahttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/es/info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessoai:ebuah.uah.es:10017/257402026-06-18T11:13:07Z
