Enhancing the Pronunciation of the /i:/-/ɪ/ English Vowel Contrast Through Authentic Materials: A Study on Spanish/Catalan Teenagers Using Short Films

This study evaluated a novel High-Variability Phonetic Training (HVPT) approach using authentic short films to improve the perception of the English /i:/-/ɪ/ vowel contrast amongst L1-Spanish/Catalan learners. Using a pre-test/post-test design, an experimental group (N=10) trained with the films, wh...

Descripción
Sumario:This study evaluated a novel High-Variability Phonetic Training (HVPT) approach using authentic short films to improve the perception of the English /i:/-/ɪ/ vowel contrast amongst L1-Spanish/Catalan learners. Using a pre-test/post-test design, an experimental group (N=10) trained with the films, while a control group (N=10) did not. The trained group showed statistically significant improvement in perceiving the vowel contrast, whereas the control group's perceptual accuracy did not change. The findings suggest that using authentic audiovisual materials is a highly effective method for L2 pronunciation training.
