It reviews the underlying concepts of geolinguistics methology, its theoretical evolution and the different types of atlases produced in Hispanic linguistic domains. It also discusses whether this methodology is applicable in the American context, given that it was designed for European linguistic domains. It explains, in addition to providing the scientific community with rigorous first-hand materials that have served to rethink and revitalize different aspects of the dialectology of Spanish, how the linguistic geography has trascended its first instrumental facet to become a linguistic discipline by approaching the interpretive study of its maps. Lastly, it reviews the influences of new technologies and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) on the changes observed in recent works, while pointing out possibilities for future developments.[ES] A partir de la evidencia de que el español abarca una extensión grande y diversificada donde se pueden identificar variedades, este capítulo trata con especial atención el principal resultado de la geografía lingüística, su evolución teórica y los distintos tipos de atlas producidos en los dominios lingüísticos hispánicos. También plantea su utilidad en el contexto americano, dado que fue una metodología pensada para dominios lingüísticos europeos. Además de proporcionar a la comunidad científica materiales rigurosos de primera mano que han servido para replantear y dinamizar distintos aspectos de la dialectología del español, explica cómo la geografía lingüística ha trascendido su primera faceta instrumental para convertirse en una disciplina lingüística al abordar el estudio interpretativo de sus mapas.
