Resumo:This thesis investigates the intricate dynamics of stance and evaluation in academic writing, particularly within PhD thesis examination reports across hard and soft disciplinary domains. Utilizing the theoretical framework of appraisal proposed by Martin and White (2005), this research meticulously analyzes a corpus of report sauthored by PhD thesis examiners, focusing on the nuanced linguistic mechanisms associated with attitude and engagement expressions. Specifically, the study explores three sub-categories of attitude: affect, appreciation, and judgment, and two subcategories of engagement: contractive and expansive resources.
