| Sumario: | Describing English: A Practical Grammar Course describes how the English language is constructed. This book introduces the basic concepts of grammar study to those (mostly undergraduate students) who have little or no prior background in linguistics for a comprehensive grammar book, but who need to know the essentials of English grammar. In this regard, the present volume is merely intended as an introduction to the grammar system of English through basic descriptions of the morphological and syntactic linguistic units: word, phrase, clause and sentence. The main levels of linguistic structure that are included in this book are morphology (word structure) and syntax (sentence structure) which together make the core of grammar. This book is conceived as a practical description of English grammar. To this end, the volume combines theory and practice in order to improve students’ grasp of the major grammatical features and facilitate the tools to carry out morphological and syntactic analyses. Another strength of the book is the focus on real, present day English. In fact, the grammatical topics presented are illustrated with naturally occurring stretches of written and spoken language from a variety of settings and discourse types. In sum, Describing English is primarily intended as an introductory grammar course book for undergraduate students of English linguistics courses in the hope that it will help them acquire a basic knowledge of the structure of the English language and ideally encourage them to progress in the study of grammar at a deeper level |
