| Sumario: | This work focuses on the study of Mexican altar cross factured in rock crystal and silver gilt preserved in the Cathedral of Palencia (Spain). The piece has the mark of the city of Mexico between mid of XVI century and ca. 1572. This cross is stylistic and iconographic included among the first manifestations of the so-called Indochristian or Tequitqui art, terms discussed here, proposing as an alternative the term “Nepantla”. This phenomenon, the combination of native and Christian tradition in Mexico helps us to understand the diversity of cultural and artistic solutions given in America under the Spanish Monarchy of 16th Century. The craftsman applied his indigenous worldview in this Christian custom. For the representation of Golgotha used the Mesoamerican concept of ‘sacred mountain’, inhabited by many animals and plants from the pre-Hispanic tradition. Explaining the iconographic program in the cross of Palencia and put it into Nepantla silverwork context are the essential novelties of this contribution. |
