In our discussion of bilingualism and sociology of language, we explore the situation faced by Spanish speakers in the United States, including discussions of language policies and bilingual education. We also examine cases of contact between various dialects of Spanish in the United States, and some variable features such as the erosion of the subjunctive mood in favor of the indicative and the overt expression of subject pronouns. Then, we give examples of some phenomena related to contact of Spanish with English, including code-switching and borrowing. To further illustrate some of these issues, we use extractions from our own corpus of New York Dominican Spanish. Lastly, we include a brief evaluation of the contribution that sociolinguistic studies of Spanish in the United States have made to the field of sociolinguistics and to linguistics in general.El objetivo de este trabajo es ofrecer una presentación de las líneas principales de investigaciones sociolingüísticas sobre el español en los Estados Unidos. Nos enfocaremos en varios temas desde aspectos macro-sociolingüísticos, como la sociología del lenguaje, hasta temas micro-sociolingüísticos que tienen que ver con la variación y el cambio. En nuestra discusión sobre el bilingüismo y la sociología del lenguaje, exploramos la situación de los hispanohablantes en los Estados Unidos y nos referimos a las políticas lingüísticas y los sistemas de educación bilingüe. También, examinamos el contacto entre diferentes dialectos del español y algunas de las variables más estudiadas como la erosión del subjuntivo, la expresión del sujeto, entre otros. Después, describimos algunos fenómenos relacionados con el contacto entre el español y el inglés como el cambio de código y los préstamos. En este trabajo, utilizamos fragmentos de nuestro propio corpus del español dominicano de Nueva York como ejemplos de los temas mencionados anteriormente.
