Resumo:The aim of this work is to enrich our knowledge about Sixto Cámara, one of the relevant politicians of the 19th century from La Rioja who has enjoyed less attention from historiography. More specifically, it is a question of throwing new light and providing a detailed historical context of analysis for the drama Jaime el Barbudo, which to date has gone virtually unnoticed –and even explicitly disdained– when studying Camara´s work as a writer and political activist. However, Jaime el Barbudo was successfully performed in numerous occasions during a long period of time, between the years 1853-1872. From the information presented here it is clear that this play by Sixto Cámara was an effective instrument to promote his critical ideas with the society of time, where the figure of the Spanish bandit acquires a new dimension as a hero coming from a low social stratum that symbolize essential virtues, such as honor, work or justice
