| Sumario: | [EN] Gated streets are one of the key urban elements that make up the so-called "defence landscapes" in various cities around the world; they are the product of a combination of factors, including the perception of insecurity, rejection of vehicular traffic and segregation. This problem is particularly evident in Latin American cities, where the context has led to a proliferation of closed streets in their typology of "subsequently closed neighbourhoods". Although this phenomenon has negative effects, such as the privatisation of public spaces and their abandonment, it cannot be denied that what is insinuated by the closing of a street is the community's desire to generate more pedestrian spaces by fostering common space, generating spaces similar to pedestrian streets and superblocks. Having said that, this paper reviews the concept of closed streets, their origins, classification, causes and effects; likewise, taking the city of Arequipa - Peru as a case study, it seeks to propose an urban-landscape solution that enhances the public-collective character of these spaces, improves their pedestrian connectivity and, in turn, mitigates the damage that such closed enclaves generate in their surroundings. |
