Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stromal cells and derived extracellular vesicles as post-myocardial infarction therapeutic toolkit

Outstanding progress has been achieved in developing therapeutic options for reasonably alleviating symptoms and prolonging the lifespan of patients suffering from myocardial infarction (MI). Current treatments, however, only partially address the functional recovery of post-infarcted myocardium, wh...

Current treatments, however, only partially address the functional recovery of post-infarcted myocardium, which is in fact the major goal for effective primary care. In this context, we largely investigated novel cell and TE tissue engineering therapeutic approaches for cardiac repair, particu-larly using multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) and natural extracellular matrices, from pre-clinical studies to clinical application. A further step in this field is offered by MSC-derived extracellular vesicles (EV), which are naturally released nanosized lipid bilayer-delimited particles with a key role in cell-to-cell communication. Herein, in this review, we further describe and discuss the rationale, outcomes and challenges of our evidence-based therapy approaches using Wharton's jelly MSC and derived EV in post-MI management.Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona 22021-01-0120212021-01-01Articlehttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501VoRhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85info:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://ddd.uab.cat/record/251553https://dx.doi.org/urn:doi:10.3390/pharmaceutics13091336reponame:Dipòsit Digital de Documents de la UABinstname:Universitat Autònoma de BarcelonaInglésengInstituto de Salud Carlos III https://doi.org/10.13039/501100004587 PI18/00256Instituto de Salud Carlos III https://doi.org/10.13039/501100004587 PI18/01227Instituto de Salud Carlos III https://doi.org/10.13039/501100004587 PI19/01788Instituto de Salud Carlos III https://doi.org/10.13039/501100004587 PI17/01487Instituto de Salud Carlos III https://doi.org/10.13039/501100004587 PIC18/00014Instituto de Salud Carlos III https://doi.org/10.13039/501100004587 ICI19/00039Instituto de Salud Carlos III https://doi.org/10.13039/501100004587 ICI20/00135Agencia Estatal de Investigación https://doi.org/10.13039/501100011033 PID2019-110137RB-I00Agencia Estatal de Investigación https://doi.org/10.13039/501100011033 SAF2017-84324-C2-1-RAgència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca https://doi.org/10.13039/501100003030 2017/SGR-483Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca https://doi.org/10.13039/501100003030 2017/SGR-719Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca https://doi.org/10.13039/501100003030 2019PROD00122open accesshttp://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2Aquest document està subjecte a una llicència d'ús Creative Commons.
