Sumario:Paradoxycally, the liberal Spanish gobernments of the middle of the xix century didn't pay the proper attention to public education, and especially to the secondary one. This being the conclusion one comes to in this article after analysing several writings of the main performers of the liberal educational policy of that time, as well as in the most significant legislative documents. From Gil y Zarate to Posada Herrera, and through the Sessions of Parlament and Legislative Collections, it can be proved how a falseness is produced in the structure of the secondary education, just as it was conceived by the first liberal government and established by the Duke of Rivas in 1836, in this way, sacrifing the very elementary education.
