Description
Summary:The vicissitudes of the founding and appointment of the bishops of the diocese of Santiago of Guatemala, in Central America, during the sixteenth century are studied, as far as possible. It also seeks to investigate the special geographical, temporal and governmental circumstances that occurred in the first Central American diocese. As well as its complex competence field and jurisdictional relations with the civil authorities of said territory, especially with the president and judges of the Audiencia y Real Chancillería de los Confines y de Guatemala. This study is carried out under the shadow of the indigenist ideas, the pastoral attitudes and the doctrinal points of view of fray Bartolomé de las Casas. Indigenous slavery in its most varied forms is the main object of attention: encomiendas or repartimientos of natives, reducciones or forced congregations in towns, tax appraisals, shoeing slaves of war or conquest and rescue or trade
