Sumario:The importance of snow during the preindustrial period is widely known. In order to collect and store it, snow pits and pit houses were built. These constructions were the result of popular knowledge and the ability of the master builder, who excavated them. Their appearance during Little Ice Age was not by chance, as the trans-formation and adaptation of the landscape where they were settled weren’t either. The need and use of snow for public health, food preservation, manufacturing iced water or their managers and the State’s economical benefits, among others, were soon noticed. The documents registered in local and regional files allow us to reasonably approach to such facts. This time we focus on the “neveros” or snow pits located in the region of Murcia, mainly in the area of Sierra Espuña, where there is a great number of these popular structures, currently fallen into disuse but, at the time, regarded as essential.
