| Sumario: | Social inequities in oncology are driven by intersecting determinants of health and healthcare at multiple levels. Inequalities in the social determinants of health (SDOH) result in delayed cancer diagnoses, sub-optimal treatment, and increased mortality rates in patients with lower socioeconomic status (SES). This article describes the SDOH that influence the field of oncology, with the aim of identifying inadequacies in clinical practice and research, and raising awareness among key stakeholders. Some SDOH cannot be modified (age, race, sex and gender), while others are considered modifiable (lifestyle, diet, exercise, unwanted loneliness, economic resources). We have developed practical recommendations for national policymakers, hospital management, healthcare professionals (HCPs), and patients that address the root causes of social disparities in cancer care. HCPs within multidisciplinary teams who manage patients with cancer are in a key position to consider and address the SDOH that impact patients, particularly those of lower SES, in the clinical oncological setting. |
