| Sumario: | [EN] Litter si ze is one of the traits with greater econo mic weight in rabbit production . The objective of thi s work is to study the extent and distribution of mortality from birth to weaning and to propose a new selection crit erion to improve litter size . A total of 1318 data of seven rabbit lines were ta ken from UPV farms. Litter size and number of dead young rabbits f rom birth until weaning were recorded. Sixty eight per cent of the mortality occurred in the first week and that most of the mortality until weaning had already occurred at the end of the second week post - partum , 86 %. Lines showed significant dif ferences for mortality . The R line, a paternal line selected for growth rate , had a higher mortality during the studied period. Differences for mortality between R line and maternal lines (V, A and B) were relevant. Paternal line (R) also showed a low litt er size at weaning. Maternal lines had the highest values for litter size at weaning . In view of the results it was decided to propose as a new criterion for selecting the number of l ive rabbits 8 days post - partum. Before starting a selection program, it should collect more data and estimate the heritabil ity and the expected response for this new selection criterion . |
