That system was being built since the end of the previous century, detached from the unsystematic set of old measurement units and procedures in many cases current since the Middle Ages. This was required by the rationalist mentality of the Enlightenment, its scientific and technical developments, the rise of commerce and communications, and other factors. All of them were impelled by a series of values that were linked to the idea of progress while encouraging the construction of national educational systems.Thus, schools started to play an important role in the assimilation, by the society as a whole, of new measures that would profoundly change their behaviour habits. This process of receiving the metric system had to be long and winding, and its study highlights the many and varied factors that shaped the evolution of the educational institutions and society that supported it.; A lo largo del siglo XIX se asistió en gran parte de los países de Europa, entre ellos España, a la implantación de un sistema métrico universal que venía elaborándose desde finales de la centuria anterior, desligado del desordenado conjunto de viejas unidades y procedimientos de medida vigentes en muchos casos desde la Edad Media. Lo requerían así la mentalidad racionalista de la Ilustración, los desarrollos científicos y técnicos, el auge del comercio y las comunicaciones, y algunos otros factores. Todos ellos se veían impulsados por una serie de valores ligados a la idea del progreso, que animaban al mismo tiempo la construcción de los sistemas nacionales de educación.Es así como se hizo jugar a las escuelas un papel importante en la asimilación, por parte de la sociedad en su conjunto, de un nuevo sistema de medidas que habría de cambiar profundamente sus hábitos de comportamiento.
