Resumo:[eng] The Balearic Islands exhibit a remarkable richness of anchialine environments and a highly diverse stygobiont fauna, with extensive cave systems that can exceed the 17 km of submerged development. To date, 69 anchialine caves have been inventoried, encompassing both large submerged systems and small coastal lakes. The present study synthesizes the current state of knowledge on the subterranean crustacean fauna of the Archipelago, totaling 36 stygobiont species and 31 genera, of which 25 species and four genera are endemic. Anchialine caves are located in coastal areas and are subjected to intense anthropogenic pressure, primarily arising from urban expansion and groundwater pollution. Twelve of these cavities are included within protected natural areas, designated as Special Areas of Conservation (ZECs or LICs) in accordance with the Habitats Directive, while many others benefit from protection under Law 42/2007 on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity and the Hydrological Plan of the Balearic Islands. In addition to their significant biological interest, these caves possess a notable geological, paleontological, and heritage value, and should be subject to comprehensive conservation measures as an essential component of the Archipelago’s natural and scientific heritage.
