Sumario:This article intends to contribute to current effort to interpret Adam Smith’s thought in terms that move beyond the traditional reductionism of economic theory by focusing on his theory of language. It shows that his point of departure was ethical, scientifi c, and linguistic scepticism, although it presents this scepticism as a premise that made possible and justifi ed the solution provided by Smith, namely, the centrality of the productive imagination according to scenic, aesthetic, and semiotic procedures.
