Sumario:[EN] During 1751, a series of earthquakes occurred on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. Despite the difficulties,some powerful people in Santo Domingo society saw this crisis as an opportunity; all of the above caused conflicts that continued for years between various groups in the territory, such as the Canarian emigrants who were settled in Azua de Compostela. The documents of Azua’s transfer allow us to delve into problems related to political authority, economic interests and abuses of the richest families. It is also possible to observe the tensions between members of local power, both civil and ecclesiastical, in order to appropriate the few resources available for the reconstruction and recovery of the affected areas. The information used to develop this research was obtained from documents from the General Archive of the Indies, the National Library of Spain and specialized bibliography
