Competitive exclussion would explain the absence of some Messor, Aphaenogaster, Tapinoma, Camponotus and, perhaps, Goniomma species. We cannot provide any biological hypothesis for the absence of Formica and TetramoriumDesprés de comparar les poblacions de formigues del Montgrí i de l'illa Meda Gran, s'intenta explicar l'absència d'algunes espècies a l'illa. El gènere Myrmica i Crematogaster scutellaris no hi troben biotops ni llocs de nidificació adequats; Aphaenogaster senilis, Cataglyphispiliscapus i Linepithema humile en serien absents a causa de la disseminació terrestre dels propàguls. Algunes espècies de Messor, Aphaenogaster, Camponotus i, potser, Goniomma,en serien absents per exclusió competitiva.
