The Messianic preaching by the Masmuda Berber Ibn Tūmart (d. 524/1130) and, most especially, the imperial construction carried out by his successor and pupil, the Zanata Berber, Abd al-Mu’min, created a political, social and economic context in which the Islamic West witnessed one of the periods of more intense intellectual flourishing, represented –for example- by the activity and output of scholars such as Ibn T.ufayl (d. 581/1185), Averroes (d. 595/1198), Maimonides (d. 1204) and the mystic Muh.yī l-dīn Ibn ‘Arabī (d. 638/1240). The cultural and religious project of the Almohads favoured intense pedagogical and encyclopaedist concerns that are still awaiting their adequate appraisal.[ES] En este artículo se trazan los rasgos principales que caracterizaron a la ‘revolución’ almohade. La predicación mesiánica del beréber Masmuda Ibn Tūmart (m. 524/1130) y, sobre todo, la construcción de un imperio por parte de su sucesor y discípulo, el beréber Zanata, ‘Abd al-Mu’min, crearon un contexto político, social y económico en el que el Occidente islámico vivió una de las épocas de mayor florecimiento intelectual, representado –por ejemplopor la actividad y la obra de figuras como Ibn T.ufayl (m. 581/1185), Averroes (m. 595/1198), Maimónides (m. 1204) y el místico Muh.yī l-dīn Ibn ‘Arabī (m. 638/1240).
