| Sumario: | (English) This thesis is based on a new concept of the ‘Urban Masia’ applied to the city of Barcelona between from the 1860s to the present. *(Although ‘‘masia’’ usually translated as 'farmhouse' in many cases, this term has to be maintainted in English texts to preserve its sense of place.) Urban Masia" not only means a "masia" in an urban area, but also includes an urban system derived from masia's spatial elements. Thus, this thesis also encompasses the disappearance of masia in urban growth as the main research material. Former studies of masia usually start with a negative evaluation of the situation in which rural masias are confronted. Therefore, the goal they aim for could be the conservation or restoration of existing masias. This academic trend does not allow the Urban Masia to be viewed as a new phenomenon for modern society. My thesis has the value of offering a new perspective on the study of the masia. Previous studies can serve as a basis to review the general content of the masia, and whenever I need more specific information, I search for data in other books, newspapers, historical archives of districts and municipalities, and so on. This thesis is organized into six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction that represents the object and methodology of the thesis. The state of the art reviews the current trend of topics related to my thesis that help to understand the theoretical scenario. The second chapter criticizes the hegemonic ideology in the study of the masia. Many ideas produced during the last century turn out to be the ones that prevent the new interpretation due to their hegemonic character. This chapter not only tries to understand the positive essence of 'what has already been defined' of the masia but also leaves doubts about what has become absolute and mythical, thus helping to define the new concept of the 'Urban Masia’. The third and fourth chapters describe the Urban Masia. The third chapter investigates the generative background of the Urban Masia, defines their spatial form makings a classification by periods and prototypes. The fourth chapter shows the 18 representative cases according to the classification made in the previous chapter. Each case shows the systematic adaptation process of the masia with the territorial ensemble confronted with the problem produced in the urban change. 13 cases belong to the districts of Barcelona, and 5 cases are from adjacent municipalities. All cases are chosen in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, considered as a unit that shares the urban system. The case of Can Negre is also used to deal with the influence of the ‘masia’ in Catalan modernism. The fifth chapter verifies the systematic effect of the Urban Masia. It demonstrates the urban system generated by the specific conditions of the masia in elements such as limit, density, infrastructure, and landscape through which the Urban Masia acquires the universality and specialty of the place as an urban system of Barcelona. It also seeks to evaluate the influence of the masia on the usual dwellings of Barcelona. Therefore, it can be understood that the masia contributes to the formation of the modern city with its own and modern system. The sixth chapter summarizes the previous chapters and insists on the paradigm shift, as the conversion of rural zone into urban zone is a universal theme that is shared worldwide. Currently, the masia seems to be a topic that is regionally specific only within Catalonia. However, based on my study of the 'Urban Masia,' I believe that its universal essence can extend beyond Catalonia to the rest of the world. For this reason, it is an interesting topic to me. |
