| Resumo: | This paper deals with the characterization of devils and demons in early Old English literature (9th-10th centuries). Special attention is given to the extension of heroic conventions and images from the epic to religious texts, so that devils function as adequate antagonists for the heroes (miles Christi) of Christian poems. The following topics are particularly studied: the protrayal of a proud Lucifer who leads his comitatus in Genesis, his characterization as an exiled nobleman in Christ and Satan in comparison with the so-called elegies, and his representation as an enemy who fights verbally the protagonists of some poetic hagiographies (Guthlac, Elene and Juliana). |
