Sumario:An external schema definition mechanism is very useful for object oriented databases; conceptually speaking, this kind of databases is more robust than structural databases, but they also have to be more flexible because they hold more information. In this work, once the main concepts of object oriented data models are introduced, and also the external schema concept, we present the state of the art and a classification of external schema definition methodologies for object oriented databases. The definition of derived classes is one of the main steps of these methodologies; so, we also present a classification of derived class definition methodologies. Lastly, we present the general lines of a new external schema definition methodology that solves some of the problems of existing methodologies.
