| Sumario: | In recent decades, the concept of decarbonisation has gained special importance within the electricity sector at a Spanish and European level. The institutions are committed to reach a level of neutral emissions by the year 2050 and, for this, the main electricity companies in the country must invest on renewable production technologies. The electricity sector in Spain has seen strong changes since the first companies were created in the 19th century. Since then, different situations have been experienced, such as the entry of the State into the regulation of the sector or its liberalization at the end of the 1990s. All this has contributed to the conglomeration of a large volume of business around a small group of electricity companies. Companies that, due to the stagnation of consumption observed at the beginning of this century, began diversification and expansion processes that have built what today are important international groups. However, liberalization has also increased competition in the electricity business, especially in the generation and marketing stages. In the last twenty years, many companies have been created to operate in one of these two activities. To maintain their volume of business within Spanish territory, the large electricity companies have decided to promote powerful strategic plans with which to increase their share of production from renewable sources and, in parallel, be able to launch aggressive tariffs in order to stop the loss of customers that are suffering in the last years |
